Even when message board rules are relatively relaxed, there are still generally accepted ways of acting appropriately and inappropriately on them. Before joining any message board community, it it customary to lurk around the board and/or attached website(s) to find out what the interests of the administrators and members are and to make some attempt to connect with those interests.

If your main purpose on a message board is to shove the culture of another board you came from into it, then you're going to be met with resentment and possibly even hostility. I occasionally post at some other forums (NESforums, TheAlmightyGuru, GSHI), but I don't spend the entire time going on and on about how great all my friends at Port Saiid and DHN are. Nor do I make hundreds of meaningless "hello" and "smiley emoticon" replies to people in a shallow attempt to "be friendly". Believe it or not, there are people who see right through that and are annoyed by it. If you care about a community, then you have to make some attempt to connect with its members on a more personal level than that. People will respect you more if you take time to respond to their actual opinions and to talk about what they're interested in talking about.

The only post I ever remember making at Bugforest's board was asking "what was your favorite NES game". Almost everyone who replied said they never played an NES and one person said Rescue Rangers.

That right there was a red flag that says that community had little in common with the Game Pond's interests and finding common ground would be difficult. The Game Pond was founded by people who grew up with gaming, cared deeply about gaming, and created a forum because they wanted to discuss gaming. Not by people who got an N64 for Christmas, it's the first console they ever had, and several months later they've lost interest in it, but still hang around because they're bored and need someone to chat with.

I suppose some people believed the common link of the N-Sider would suffice, but most people at the Game Pond had gotten past the N-Sider and cared more about the conversations than where they took place. (This sketch is sort of about that.)You could clearly see the division between these two different mindsets by observing what would happen when people who had never been to N-Sider found the Game Pond. Some would stay for the conversations. Others would go off to N-Sider chat and then the only posts they could bother to make afterwards would be to complain about those conversations (not to actually participate in them).

To be fair, the BFMA was not the only ezboard this sort of thing happened with. I have no idea why Seto's board was being praised by some people at the Game Pond when it was mainly used for Dragon Ball Z tournaments and Final Fantasy 7 discussion. The only reason I can even think of is maybe that some people wanted the Game Pond to be the biggest ezboard ever and thought the best way to achieve that is to be "friends" with other big ezboards, like Seto's board and the BFMA. The problem with granting instant Internet Celebrity Status on someone just for having a large ezboard is that it complicates situations for innocent users when that person turns out to be a problem.
