Some people say this game is better than Startropics, but most people seem to think it isn't. As a fan of the original Startropics, I'm thinking of playing Zoda's Revenge, but I want to know what people here think of it.

I liked Zoda's Revenge more than StarTropics. I thought it had better play control. I did like StarTropics, but I thought the play control hampered it down a bit.

Thanks, FO, for being the only person to reply. I agree with you about the play control being better, but for some reason, I still like Startropics more than Zoda's Revenge. You can read more about my thoughts at your board.

I like the first StarTropics game more, too, although I never actually finished Zoda's Revenge.

I should play this game again someday. I've only finished both StarTropics games once. I started a replay of StarTropics a long time ago, but only got about 1/3 of the way through it and stopped.
I confess that I never beat the Ancient Ruins area of StarTropics without using the Heart Duplication glitch.

Does anyone else think that Zoda's Revenge is just a big rip off of Zorba the Greek?
I don't like games that are fun. |

I'll have to replay Star Tropics some time. It's probably been something like 9 years since I last beat it. It was one of those games (like SMB2 and PunchOut) that I got for about $5 near the end of the '90's. I think I beat it before going on Nsider, so it was probably '97 or '98.
My memory was that it didn't especially impress me, but I didn't actively dislike it, either. So, I might be expected to find it OK if I replayed it. |

And for some reason I didn't post about Zoda's Revenge when I posted in this thread before...
I think I actually got and beat that game first. I can't recall the exact reason for that. It might have gone on sale first, or maybe I just thought the sequel would be more "advanced", or something. Anyway, that was another $5 late '90's NES purchase. I've replayed that game a little more recently. (I also finished it more times total than ST1). I think I might have replayed it when FO wrote her review. That would have just been a few years ago. I think I might have found it a little more entertaining than the original Star Tropics. I liked the play control more, and there was more variety to the settings. It was probably at least slightly easier than Star Tropics, though. But I do remember there being some decent stuff in the sewer areas in Venice (like the boss you have to circle while attacking). For some reason, I thought the "Cactus dance" puzzle was nonsense until the last time I replayed it. You have to do the moves relative to yourself -- not the screen -- but for some reason I thought I did that previously. Oh, well. All in all, a decent game. Another random comment about ST1: I hear complaints about the robot's code, and the need for the manual there. Well, I'm 99.9999% sure off the top of my head that the code is 747, which is easy to remember. Even if that's wrong, if there are only 3 digits, at trying 1 code a second, it would only take 17 minutes to exhaustively try them all. That might not be the most fun you can have with a game, but it's not a huge amount of time. "Without a foothold in the past, we cannot walk towards the future." -Vagrant Story |

I don't remember if Zoda's Revenge had any or not but the only thing I didn't like about StarTropics is that it had some cheap walk-through walls.
I wish Nintendo had the gonads to make games like those again. Original ideas with new characters and tough dungeon designs.
