I guess it depends on how the game is presented - like if the games is meant to be taken seriously, or if it's a fantasy setting. For example, Mario flies in SMB3 by spinning a raccoon tail that he got by eating a magic leaf. This is generally acceptable. I was playing Rescue Rangers on NES, and it occurred to me that I still haven't figured out what the purpose of that little bottle with the "P" on it is...In Breath of Fire, what good is the Broken Sword? It can't be fixed. Albert Odyssey, which FO mentioned earlier, has alot of useless items, like the Silver Candlestick, Sunglasses, Rosary, and some other things.
